Why Did So Many Rock Stars Die Young?

Why did so many young and rock stars die so young, when they were at the top of their game? There seem to be many different answers to this question, but it all boils down to one general thing — the pressure and trappings of fame.

Many people chase fame and fortune, because it’s one of the things our society values above many other things. Unfortunately, it’s a double-edged sword, and many are blinded by the wonders of fame, and don’t consider that it has a dark side.

Just look at how many rockers died due to drug overdoses. This also goes for many other famous people, not just musicians. Let’s consider why they might have gotten on the drugs in the first place:

They grew up without a lot of money, so now that they can afford pretty much anything their hearts desire. They splurge on everything, from cars, to houses and all wonderful recreational things, including drugs of course.

Janis Joplin AKA “The Queen of Scream” died from a heroin overdose on October 4th 1970 at the age of 27, adding her to the “27 Club”, which is the name given to the group of rock stars who died at the age of 27. She seemed to be a lonely woman, even though she was a wild woman on stage.

“On stage, I make love to 25,000 different people, then I go home alone.”

She passed before she could finish her album “Pearl” in LA that year. Strangely enough, the last song on the album, the only one she didn’t sing because she died before it’s recording, was titled “Buried Alive in the Blues”.

Drugs can become a crutch and a solace for those who are stressed, depressed or just lonely, which can be very prevalent in the lives of famous people.

Drugs like heroin and coke aren’t the only rock star killers out there. When a cocktail of certain drugs are mixed with alcohol, the effects can be dangerous. Both Jimi Hendrix, John Bonham (the drummer from Led Zeppelin) died from asphyxiation on vomit, which means they were lying in a bad position for vomiting in your sleep. Hendrix died not even a month before Joplin, and Bonham passed a decade later in the same month. Jim Morrison died from heart failure due to drug overdose, and Amy Winehouse died from alcohol poisoning.

Another specific rock star killer is suicide. Depression might not be properly diagnosed or treated among famous people who entertain for a living, since they always have to “put on a show” for others.

Kurt Cobain

I really miss being able to blend in with people.

People who knew Kurt well said that he was a sensitive soul, and could no longer take the pressures of fame. He was also doing drugs, but what musicians honestly don’t? It was his own sadness and overwhelm that lead to his death, and the conspiracy theories that his widow Courtney Love had a hand in it never held up.

This is an excerpt from what is believed to be Kurt’s suicide note, describing how he felt about his family and himself:

I have a goddess of a wife who sweats ambition and empathy and a daughter who reminds me too much of what i used to be, full of love and joy, kissing every person she meets because everyone is good and will do her no harm. And that terrifies me to the point to where I can barely function. I can’t stand the thought of Frances becoming the miserable, self-destructive, death rocker that I’ve become.

Other rockers that committed suicide were Ian Curtis from Joy Division, Ingo Schwichtenberg from Helloween, and Vince Welnick from the Grateful Dead.
