Tiny Pageant Participant Spots a Mirror on TV Interview

Somewhere along the line, on a drawn out session of YouTube video exploring I stumbled across one of those Toddler and Tiaras episode clips. If you’re not aware of Toddlers and Tiaras, I recommend turning back now. It’s up to you to decide whether or not it’s enjoyable to watch but I’m happy to bet you’ll view more than you originally intended. The show kind of sucks you in, no matter how reluctant you are. It’s a television show on TLC that highlights the lives of precious little…well, I’ll let the network describe it.

On any given weekend, on stages across the country, little girls and boys parade around wearing makeup, false eyelashes, spray tans and fake hair to be judged on their beauty, personality and costumes. Toddlers and Tiaras follows families on their quest for sparkly crowns, big titles, and lots of cash.  (Rebecca Drobis, TLC.com)

It is pageant life. I’ve never been introduced to such a thing, but of course I’m familiar with the Miss America and Miss Universe pageants. When I first stumbled across an episode of Toddlers and Tiaras I thought it was the Miss America pageant– except everyone seemed incredibly short and almost doll-like. Nope not dolls I quickly realized, just tiny little girls! I’ll admit, many of the girls and boys are cute and they put a lot of heart into what they do. Furthermore I’m not here to say I agree or disagree with these parenting styles presented in the show. I will absolutely say however, it’s hard to watch and it’s hard to stop watching.

The parents on the show have taken a lot of criticism for their parenting style and pressure they put on their sons and daughters to succeed. In addition, they often are criticized for pressuring their children to grow up too fast or to be portrayed as much older than they really are. Such criticism was taken to a local news station in LA, where the news anchor interviews a Toddlers and Tiaras mom (with daughter in tow). He questions about her daughters participation on the show ands whether it portrays teachings of poise and stage presence or exploitation of the young participants. The young T and T star sits between the news anchor and her mom during the video and apparently just across from a mirror. Watch as she cannot get enough of looking at her own face!! I don’t like or agree with the title of the video but the clip itself is hilarious!!
